Shipment tracking customer portal
A self-service portal where a trading business's customers track orders and shipments without calling.
Overview
"Where is my order?" is the most common message a trading business receives and the easiest to automate. This concept gives each customer a clear view of their own orders, current shipment stage and paperwork, and takes the repetitive calls off the sales team.
The problem it explores
Customers of distributors and traders keep phoning and emailing to ask where an order is, and staff answer by hand from a spreadsheet.
Design decisions
Status first, detail on demand
The first screen answers the question people actually have: which orders are moving, which are late, and when each is expected. Everything else is one click deeper.
Customers only see their own data
Access is scoped per customer account, with invoices and delivery documents downloadable from the same page as the shipment they belong to.
Plain-language stages
Internal codes are translated into stages a customer understands, such as Packed, In transit and Out for delivery, with a short timeline of what changed and when.
What the concept includes
- Order list with status, expected date and delay flags
- Shipment timeline with stage-by-stage history
- Delivery documents and invoices per order
- Search by order number or reference
- Notifications when a status changes
Under the hood
A Next.js portal reads from a Django REST API over PostgreSQL. Orders sync from the business's existing system on a schedule, and carrier updates arrive through webhooks, so the portal needs no re-keying by staff.
